Synopsis
In 1942 Paris, Mori Rothstein—an art dealer and expert in master paintings from the Renaissance to Realism—has been sought after by every major museum in the world for his knowledge. Also hunting him down is Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering.
Goering intends to exploit this Jew’s knowledge in service to the Fuhrer. Reluctantly, Mori cooperates to keep his family safe and begins the task of appraising stolen French art. As his friends and fellow Jews disappear, he forges a questionable relationship with one of the most notorious Nazis in Europe—his fidelity and morals tested daily.
Amidst the plundered art that shows up in Mori’s workspace is a painting Mori himself procured for a client, The Expulsion of Hagar, by Caravaggio. As more and more of his clients’ paintings appear, Mori’s sense of duty, and his ire, change the course of his work for Goering. With the help of his son Émile, a master painter, Mori sets in motion a plan to steal paintings from the Nazis for safekeeping, walking himself and his family into a web of intrigue, kidnapping, and murder.
Praise
"A Jewish family's courageous defiance of the Nazis in German-occupied Paris sets the stage for a tale of intrigue and danger in Grubman's debut novel... The Storm Over Paris is a "dark, gripping historical thriller" with "evocative and frightening descriptions of life in Paris under Nazi rule."
—Kirkus Reviews
"A suspenseful story that plunges readers into the deadly darkness the Nazis cast over occupied Paris during WWII... Each page brings yet another struggle as the tale speeds to a final, seemingly impossible challenge. Grubman rises to the challenge of such a fast-paced novel, infusing the story with an aroma of suspense and fear. The characterizations are deep and complex, the author accurately draws on historical events to frame the story, and Grubman's expertise as a connoisseur of fine art often shows through."
—Blue Ink Review
"A harrowing tale of art theft, war, and family. While the story is filled with death and pain, its messages about family and love are ever present. The Storm over Paris is a taut historical thriller brimming with heart and darkness."
—Foreward Reviews
"The Storm Over Paris very suspenseful. I recommend The Storm Over Paris to those who love World War II thrillers and to those who love fiction centered on art."
